About Time I Posted Again

So lately I've just been working on raising funds for India. Thank you so much to the people who have already donated. You are helping me get to my dream. :) Thank you, Thank you so much. :) In the future I'm looking at hosting a fundraiser of me playing piano and/or bass to inform people about Rising Star and help me raise funds. Also my friend Madi Smith is looking at joining me. I really hope she can. If she did she would join me in the fundraiser on her violin. I'm so looking forward to this summer. Over and out.

A note about donating

Any amount is appreciated. It doesn't have to be $50. Just a little bit helps.

Thanks.

Letter

Here's my letter that I've sent out to family and friends. It has more info about Rising Star and about how to help me raise funds. :)

Dear Family and Friends:

This summer I’m going to India as a volunteer with Rising Star Outreach (http://www.risingstaroutreach.org)and I’d like you to be a part of my service. I’m writing to invite you to join me this summer as my stateside partner in my efforts to help families affected by leprosy. Leprosy in India is considered a curse. Those who contract the disease are outcast from society and their families and are often consigned to remote leprosy colonies where they have no choice but to beg for their survival. Rising Star Outreach helps these families by educating their children, offering medical treatment, and, using micro-credit, giving parents a way to go from begging on the streets to becoming self-sufficient. I am thrilled about this opportunity to serve these people.

The work of Rising Star Outreach happens largely because of volunteers like me. As a
volunteer, I help fundraise for the organization. Each volunteer is expected to raise at
least $2000 to help pay for the programs and initiatives of Rising Star like the
children’s school, medical clinic, and colony support projects. A small part of that
money also covers the cost of my stay. As a fundraiser, I then become an active
shareholder of Rising Star and not just a temporary visitor! As my partner, so will you.
Please join me in making this happen. I know that many of you feel similarly inspired
by the work of Rising Star Outreach and will want to participate alongside me.

Rising Star requires that I include at least 25 other people in my commitment
to serve with the idea that everyone involved will share in the blessings of my service.
By contributing $50 or more, you will become a Volunteer Partner. I hope, while I’m in
India, that you will include those I serve in your prayers. I also hope that you will
follow my blog at http://emaxine.blogspot.com/ and keep up with the great work I’ll be doing. As my stateside partner, you will be helping to facilitate that work. You and your family will be able to share in my days and experience miracles in the lives of the leprosy families. I will be leaving for India on July 12, 2010. I have been asked to have my money in to Rising Star by June 12.

If you would like to partner with me on this project, you can either contribute online at www.risingstaroutreach.org/volunteerpartners or fill out the attached Partner Information Sheet and send it with a check to:

Rising Star Outreach, P.O. Box 116408, Atlanta, GA 30368

I hope you’ll be able to join me as a partner in this adventure! It will be an honor to
have you along for the ride. Together, we can bring hope to these people in need.

Namaste,
Emily Strobell

In Summer

I've decided to finally set up a blog. I've wanted to do it for awhile but I've finally been pushed. In the summer I'm hoping to volunteer with Rising Star in India. This is a personal blog but also one to keep people informed about what I do in getting prepared for and going to India. I'm so excited!!! I've wanted to see India since I was like 10 and now I have my chance. I don't know how my love of India began but now I'm fulfilling a part of my dream. The future's so bright I gotta wear shades (to quote my favorite TV show, 21 Jump Street). The outfit on the left is a salwar and probably one I'll wear a lot while volunteering in India. The women are required to wear traditional Indian dress. I'm looking forward to the change in wardrobe.
